The Ministry of Education has started field-level work to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in 517 secondary-level educational institutions across Bangladesh under the Learning Acceleration in Secondary Education (LAISE) project.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) announced the move in a letter issued on Wednesday. The letter was sent to deputy commissioners in all districts.

Under the approved project plan, CCTV cameras will be installed on a pilot basis in one institution from each upazila and metropolitan police station area. The 517 institutions include 362 secondary schools and 155 madrasas.

DSHE said the Secondary and Higher Education Division approved the “Educational Institution Selection Guidelines, 2025” for choosing the institutions. Based on the guidelines, the Technical and Madrasa Education Division has already selected 155 upazilas and police station areas for madrasa selection.

For schools, local committees formed under the guidelines will choose one secondary-level institution from each upazila and police station area in the country’s 64 districts.

The selected names must be sent directly to the LAISE project office in Dhaka. Submissions should go through the respective Upazila Nirbahi Officer. In metropolitan areas, the names must be sent through the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education).

Officials instructed all deputy commissioners’ offices to take the necessary steps to complete the selection process.

The pilot programme is aimed at expanding security monitoring in schools and madrasas through camera surveillance systems. The results of this first phase may help guide wider decisions on future installation in educational institutions.

The next step will be the completion of local selections and submission of institution names to the project director for further action.
