The government has appointed Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed as chairman of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC). He is now serving as Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka.
The Ministry of Education published the appointment notice on its website on Tuesday, March 17. Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon had earlier confirmed the decision. He spoke at a media briefing at the Secretariat on Monday.
An official order signed by Additional Secretary Alif Rudaba confirmed the move. The order came from the Secondary and Higher Education Division. It said the appointment followed Section 4(1) of the UGC Act 1973.
Professor Mamun will take charge from the day he joins the office. His term as chairman will last four years. He will receive salary and benefits under existing government rules.
The post became vacant after Professor Dr S M A Faiz stepped down. He resigned on Monday morning due to physical illness. Authorities accepted his resignation on the same day.
The UGC oversees public and private universities across Bangladesh. The body plays a key role in maintaining higher education standards.
Officials expect Professor Mamun to assume his new role soon. Further administrative steps will follow after he formally joins the commission.
