One of the country’s oldest law institutions has restored its former name after five years. The change was announced by the National University in a notice published on its website on Friday, 27 February.
The notice said the decision was taken at the university’s 272nd Syndicate meeting on 13 December 2025. According to the decision, “Shaheed Advocate Abdur Rab Serniabat Law College, Barishal” has been renamed “Barishal Law College, Barishal.”
The institution’s name was changed in 2021. At the 92nd meeting of the Academic Council of the National University, approval was given to rename the college “Shaheed Advocate Abdur Rab Serniabat Law College.”
An office order signed on 18 March 2021 by Acting College Inspector Professor Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman directed the college to deposit Tk 5 lakh. The amount was to be paid to the Registrar of the National University through Sonali Bank to complete the name change process.

With the latest decision, the college has officially returned to its original name, Barishal Law College.
Established in 1963, the college is widely known as one of the oldest law colleges in Bangladesh. The new decision will now apply to all official documents and academic records under the university’s authority.
