Newly admitted medical students across Bangladesh will plant more than 11,000 trees before starting their classes. The programme will take place on Sunday, May 3, alongside the official orientation for the 2025–26 academic year.

The Directorate General of Medical Education confirmed the plan in an official notice. Professor Dr. Saki Md. Zakiul Alam, Director of Medical Education, signed the notice.

According to the announcement, the orientation will begin at 9:00 AM. It will be held at both government and private medical colleges across the country. Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bakul will join the event virtually and inaugurate it.

A total of 112 medical colleges will connect to a central online session. More than 11,000 newly admitted students are expected to take part. After the central programme ends, each college will complete its own orientation session.

On the same day, students will join a campaign titled ‘One Student, One Tree Plantation.’ Under this programme, each student will plant one sapling. This will result in more than 11,000 trees being planted nationwide.

Officials said the initiative aims to promote environmental awareness among future doctors. It also encourages students to take part in social responsibility from the start of their careers.

Data from the Directorate shows a strong interest in medical education this year. Over 122,000 students applied for admission. Among them, 5,100 students secured seats in 37 government medical colleges. Another 6,278 students were admitted to 75 private medical colleges.

Authorities said both the orientation and plantation programme will be completed on the same day across all institutions.
