Students in schools and colleges across Bangladesh will enjoy a 16-day continuous holiday during the upcoming Eid al-Adha and summer vacation period. Madrasa students will receive an even longer 21-day break under the academic calendar for 2026.
According to the approved holiday schedule, the vacation for primary, lower secondary, and secondary schools will begin on 24 May and continue until 4 June. When weekly holidays before and after the break are added, students will get a total of 16 consecutive days off.
Colleges will also follow a similar schedule. Their planned 12-day holiday, combined with weekly closures, will result in a 16-day continuous vacation for students.
Madrasas will have the longest break this year. Their holiday will start on 24 May and continue until 11 June. As weekly holidays fall before the vacation period, madrasa students will receive a total of 21 uninterrupted days off.
The extended breaks come despite the government fixing the official Eid-ul-Azha public holiday at seven days. The Cabinet Division announced on Thursday night that the general government holiday will run from 25 May to 31 May.
The notice also said the weekly holiday on 23 May, which falls on a Saturday, has been cancelled. Government officials and employees will have to work on that day.

However, education sector sources said the Cabinet decision will not affect the previously approved academic calendar. The holiday schedule for schools, colleges, and madrasas will remain unchanged.
The long break is expected to allow students and families more time to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha and travel during the summer vacation period. Educational institutions are scheduled to reopen according to their respective academic calendars after the holidays end.
