Senior Professor Dr Md Israfil of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Dhaka has been appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of Thakurgaon University, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Education on Wednesday.
The appointment was made with the approval of the President, who is also the Chancellor of the university. The notification was issued on May 6 under Section 10(1) of the “Thakurgaon University Act, 2023.”
According to the notification signed by Md Sultan Ahmed, Assistant Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, Dr Israfil will serve for four years from the date of joining or until his retirement, whichever comes first.
The notification said he will receive salary and allowances equal to his current position. He will also receive other benefits according to existing rules. As the chief executive officer of the university, he must stay on the campus full-time. The Chancellor also has the authority to cancel the appointment if necessary.
The announcement has created excitement in the northern districts of Thakurgaon and Panchagarh, where many people know Dr Israfil for his academic and cultural work.
Dr Israfil is a respected figure in theatre studies and higher education. He graduated in 1991 from the National School of Drama in India. Later, he completed a PhD from Rabindra Bharati University in 1999. His research focused on street theatre in Bangladesh.
He has taught at the University of Dhaka for many years and served as chairman of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies from 2006 to 2009.
During his academic career, Dr Israfil joined workshops and research activities in nearly 16 countries, including India, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and South Korea.
Although his family roots are in Atwari Upazila of Panchagarh, he spent much of his childhood and teenage years in Thakurgaon town. Many local residents believe his experience and connection to the region will help the new university grow quickly in the coming years.
