Schools and Colleges to remain shut during Ramadan – Institute Wise Holiday List

Revised government schedule sets holidays until late March for most institutions

All schools, colleges, and madrasas across Bangladesh are now closed for the holy month of Ramadan. The decision follows a revised holiday schedule published on Wednesday night by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

According to the notice, secondary, junior secondary, and primary schools began their Ramadan holidays on Thursday, 19 February. The break will continue until 26 March. As 26 March falls on a Thursday and the next two days are weekly holidays on Friday and Saturday, teachers and staff will effectively remain off duty until 28 March.

Colleges began their holidays earlier, on Wednesday, 18 February. Classes will resume on Sunday, 29 March. The 2026 academic calendar, published by the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education, shows that colleges will remain closed for 26 consecutive days from 18 February to 25 March. This period combines Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, and part of the summer vacation.

A one-day holiday for Independence and National Day on 26 March is also included. Since the following two days are weekly holidays, classes will start again on 29 March.

The detailed schedule shows that general holidays were declared on 11 and 12 February for the elections. As 13 and 14 February were Friday and Saturday, madrasas remained closed. The long Ramadan holiday then began on 15 February. In total, madrasas will observe a 46-day break.

During this extended holiday, several important national and religious days will be observed. These include Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, Shab-e-Qadr, Jumu’atul Wida, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Independence and National Day. As 27 and 28 March fall on Friday and Saturday, madrasa classes will resume on 29 March.

The National University has also published a holiday list for its affiliated colleges. These institutions began their break on 18 February and will remain closed until 25 March, covering 26 days.

However, public universities across the country remain open. Classes and examinations are continuing as scheduled.

The annual holiday calendar also outlines other breaks later in the year. Colleges will close for 10 days from 24 May to 5 June for Eid al-Adha. There will be another 10-day holiday from 18 to 29 October for Durga Puja, Bijoya Dashami, Prabarana Purnima, and Lakshmi Puja. An 11-day winter vacation is scheduled from 17 to 31 December. In addition, three reserved holidays will remain at the discretion of heads of institutions.

The revised schedule sets a clear timeline for educational institutions during Ramadan. Classes in most schools, colleges, and madrasas are expected to resume from 29 March, following the extended break.
