A surprise inspection at a Jamalpur examination center resulted in a dozen candidates abandoning the exam mid-test on Saturday after being found in possession of fraudulent materials.
The incident occurred at the Abdul Khaleque Government Memorial College examination center in the Dewanganj subdistrict of Jamalpur on the afternoon of Saturday, July 25, during the English (Compulsory) test of the National University Third Year Examination (Pass), on the third day of the exam.
What Happened
According to the Upazila Secondary Education Bureau, the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), Shah Zahurul Hossain, visited the center for a routine inspection while the exam was being administered. During the visit, fraudulent materials were found in the possession of 12 examinees. In accordance with the National University’s examination regulations, the UNO ordered their immediate expulsion from the center.
The expelled candidates came from two affiliated colleges in roughly equal numbers:
- 6 candidates from Hatibhanga Mofazzal Mia Memorial College
- 6 candidates from Sanandabari Degree College
Upazila Academic Supervisor Sajal Kumar Bhadra confirmed the incident, stating that the 12 examinees were expelled from the centre on the UNO’s orders, in accordance with examination regulations.
The Official Line: Zero Tolerance
UNO head Shah Zahurul Hossain was straightforward in explaining the reasons for the measure. He stated that there is no room for any kind of plagiarism or irregularity at the examination center. Daily inspections are carried out to ensure that the exam takes place in a fair, transparent, and plagiarism-free environment, and he added that this oversight will continue.
This detail about the daily inspections is noteworthy. Far from being a one-off measure, it appears to be part of a continuous and sustained monitoring effort at the center throughout the third-year exam period.
Context: A Season of Heightened Exam Vigilance
This incident is part of a broader trend this exam season. In all public baccalaureate, bachelor’s, and other examinations across the country this year, education authorities have repeatedly emphasized the strict and visible enforcement of the law against cheating, from expulsions from centers to, in some entrance exams, tiered security measures including facial recognition and device bans.
For third-year bachelor’s degree students elsewhere, Saturday’s expulsions serve as a stark reminder: exam centers this season operate under close and active supervision, and materials or devices that should not be in exam rooms are detected and penalized in real time.
