DHAKA, July 19 — Fifty people were detained on allegations of examination fraud during the Assistant Sub-Food Inspector recruitment examination under the Food Directorate at Dhaka College on Friday.
The detentions took place around 12:00 pm at the Dhaka College examination centre in the capital. Dhaka College Principal Professor A.K.M. Elias confirmed the matter.
According to sources, the examination began at 11:00 am on Friday. During an inspection at the centre, Executive Magistrate Md. Sharifullah, who was on duty from the Dhaka District Administration Office, led an operation that resulted in the detention of 50 people.
Of those detained, 28 were found inside the examination centre with electronic devices. Another 22 people were detained outside the centre near the main gate of Dhaka College.
Authorities said legal action has already been taken against some of the accused. Under Sections 245 and 258 of the Penal Code, at least 16 people were sentenced to jail terms ranging from one to seven days.
Professor Elias said officials became suspicious of several candidates during the examination. After checking them, authorities found electronic devices and messages on mobile phones.
He said the candidates allegedly scanned examination questions and sent them outside the centre. Answers were then reportedly sent back to them through mobile communication.
According to the principal, two groups were involved in the alleged fraud. One group was detained while attempting to enter from outside the gate, while the other was caught inside the examination hall.
The accused candidates were brought from different examination rooms and kept separately before being handed over to the magistrate assigned to the centre, he added.
Jahangir Alam, Assistant Commissioner of the New Market region under the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said cases would be filed against those accused of examination fraud.
He said the accused would be produced before the court after the completion of legal procedures.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over maintaining fairness and security in public recruitment examinations. Authorities said legal proceedings against those detained are now underway.
