DU VC Niaz Ahmed Khan Resigns

Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan has resigned from the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka. He handed over his resignation letter on Sunday morning, 22 February. The letter was submitted to Education Minister Ehsanul Haque Milon.

The Vice-Chancellor’s protocol officer, Mohammad Firoz, confirmed the development. He said the resignation letter was submitted to the minister in the morning. However, the ministry has not yet made any formal announcement. He added that the remaining procedures will begin after the resignation is officially accepted.

Professor Khan has also applied to the President to return to his previous position. He seeks to rejoin as a Grade-1 Professor in the Department of Development Studies at the university.

Sources at the Ministry of Education said he decided to resign for personal and administrative reasons. Officials said all further steps will follow existing rules and regulations.

Earlier, before the election, Professor Khan spoke at a press conference. He said the emergency situation at the university was easing. He also said there was an overall upward trend in academic and administrative activities.

“I now feel that we have reached a good stage in the course of carrying out our responsibilities, and I want to step aside,” he said at the time.

He also stressed the need for a smooth transition. He said the university should not face any sudden vacuum in leadership. If the government and stakeholders needed time to ensure continuity, he was willing to consider it.

At the same briefing, he said he wanted to step aside so the political government could arrange its administration in its own way. He added that he was ready to provide cooperation if needed. He also requested the government to release him from deputation and allow him to return to his department to resume teaching.

The University of Dhaka is the country’s oldest public university and plays a key role in higher education. Any change in its top leadership is closely followed by students, teachers, and policymakers.

The Ministry of Education is expected to complete the formal process once the resignation is accepted in line with government procedures.
