Govt to Reappoint Retired Teachers to Ease Shortage

    Govt to Reappoint Retired Teachers

The government has decided to reappoint retired teachers to address a shortage in classrooms across Bangladesh. The Ministry of Education issued a directive on April 12 to prepare lists of retired but physically capable teachers.

The instruction came in a letter signed by Shirin Akter, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Private Secondary-1 Branch. The letter was sent to Deputy Commissioners, Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs), and the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education.

Officials said many private schools face disruptions due to a lack of teachers. Recruitment delays by the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority have added to the problem.

To manage the situation, the ministry has asked each upazila to create a pool of experienced retired teachers. Local authorities will prepare the lists with advice from UNOs. School management committees will approve the final selection.

Teachers from this pool will be appointed temporarily when needed. The aim is to ensure regular classroom teaching and maintain the quality of education.

The ministry also instructed that payments for these teachers will come from the institutions’ own funds. The Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education has been asked to guide schools on managing these expenses.

This move is expected to help schools continue classes without long gaps. It may also reduce pressure on ongoing teacher recruitment processes.

Officials say the next step is to complete the teacher lists quickly so that appointments can begin where shortages are most severe.
