The Bangladesh Technical Education Board has ordered suspension of teaching and admission activities at 147 diploma-level institutions from the 2026–27 academic year. The decision was announced in a letter issued on Thursday, June 4. It cites a shortage of students as the main reason for the action.
According to the letter, the affected institutions offer Diploma in Engineering, Diploma in Textile, and Diploma in Agriculture programmes. These institutions have reportedly failed to enrol students for a long period.
The Board has instructed all concerned institutions to submit explanations by June 18. They must explain why their admission activities should not be suspended. They must also respond on why their teaching approval should not be cancelled.

Among the 147 institutions, 120 run Diploma in Engineering programmes. Another 12 institutions offer Diploma in Textile. The remaining 15 provide Diploma in Agriculture programmes.
The notice also refers to Sub-rule 5.4 of the Private Technical Educational Institution policy of 2020. The rule allows the Board to cancel approval if institutions fail to meet required standards. These standards include infrastructure, teacher recruitment, and academic conditions.
The decision may affect technical education planning across Bangladesh. Diploma institutions play a key role in producing skilled workers. A reduction in functioning institutions may reduce training access for students in technical fields.
For many students, a diploma education is a direct path to employment. Any suspension of admission activities could limit future study options in engineering, textile, and agriculture sectors.
The institutions must respond by June 18, after which further regulatory steps may follow based on their explanations.
