Primary Schools to Get Midday Meals

Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has announced that all government primary schools across Bangladesh will receive midday meals within this year.

He made the announcement on Thursday (June 4) at around 11:30 am in Mirpur, Dhaka. The event took place during the inauguration of the national-level Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament at Mirpur National Bangla School and College.

The minister said the programme is designed to help reduce child malnutrition. He said every student will receive food support in school once the system is fully in place.

He also said that no school will be left without basic facilities. These include food, tables, and school uniforms. He added that the government is working to ensure a more comfortable learning environment for children.

“We do not want to see children going to schools carrying heavy bags,” he said. “They should be able to smile, play, and take part in activities while building the future of the country.”

Special guests at the event included State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Education and Primary and Mass Education Mahdi Amin.

The midday meal plan is expected to support better nutrition for children in primary schools. It may also improve attendance and learning conditions across government schools in Bangladesh.

For many families, school meals can reduce daily food pressure at home. This is especially important in low-income and rural areas where access to balanced nutrition can be limited.

The government is expected to move ahead with implementation within the year, with preparations continuing to ensure the programme reaches all government primary schools nationwide.
