The government has announced a new plan to give free school bags, dresses, and shoes to students of government primary schools across Bangladesh.
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon shared the update on Wednesday, April 29. He spoke after an inter-ministerial meeting at the conference room of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education.
The minister said the programme will begin as a pilot project from next July. Under the first phase, students in two schools in each upazila will receive jute-made school bags and shoes.
He also said the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has promised to provide school bags, dresses, and shoes for 100,000 students.
According to the minister, talks have also taken place with other business groups. He said they are expected to give support based on their ability.
The meeting focused on how to implement the nationwide programme for government primary school students. Officials discussed supply, coordination, and support from public and private bodies.
Several senior officials and advisers attended the meeting. They included Prime Minister’s adviser Dr. Mahdi Amin, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md. Shariful Alam, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shah-e Alam, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj, and State Minister for Culture Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayem.
Leaders from BGMEA and other business organisations were also present. The plan may help reduce school costs for many families and support regular attendance among young students.
The government is expected to finalise the pilot rollout before distribution starts in July.
