The government of Bangladesh has ordered all public and private universities to close from Monday, March 9. Authorities say the step will help save electricity and fuel during the ongoing crisis linked to the war in the Middle East.
The decision follows instructions from Prime Minister Tareq Rahman. The Ministry of Education announced the directive on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
According to the ministry, universities will begin their holidays early for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr. All institutions will remain closed from March 9 until the Eid holiday period already listed in their academic calendars.
Officials said the measure forms part of a broader effort to reduce national energy use. The ministry said saving electricity and fuel is necessary to respond to the current global situation.
The directive also sets rules for energy use on university campuses and offices. Staff members have been asked to rely on natural daylight when possible. The ministry said lights should remain off during the day if sunlight is sufficient.
Where lighting is required, institutions should use only half of the usual number of lights. Offices must also avoid unnecessary use of fans, air conditioners, and other electrical equipment.

When air conditioners are used, the temperature must remain at 25 degrees Celsius or higher. Staff members must turn off lights, fans, and air conditioners when leaving rooms.
The ministry also directed universities to switch off unnecessary lighting in corridors, stairways, and washrooms. Decorative lighting should not be used.
In addition, offices must ensure all electrical devices are turned off after working hours. Authorities also advised universities to limit vehicle use and reduce fuel consumption.
Officials said the directive implements earlier guidance issued by the Cabinet Division. Universities are expected to follow the order until the scheduled Eid holiday period begins.
