The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations began across Bangladesh on Tuesday, with 25,408 candidates absent on the first day, according to the Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee.
The committee said six examinees and one invigilator were expelled during the day’s examinations under the country’s 11 education boards.
Under the nine general education boards, 1,134,853 students were registered for the Bangla First Paper exam. Of them, 1,122,963 attended, while 11,890 were absent.
Two students were expelled under the general boards. One was from the Dhaka Education Board and the other from the Dinajpur Education Board.
The average absentee rate across the nine general boards stood at 1.05 percent. Barishal Board recorded the highest rate at 1.39 percent, while Dinajpur Board had the lowest rate.
Under the Madrasa Education Board, 254,903 students were expected to sit for the Dakhil Quran Majid and Tajvid examination. However, 243,692 candidates took part, leaving 11,211 absent.

Four candidates were expelled under the Madrasa Board. The average absentee rate there was 4.40 percent, the highest among the three streams.
For the Bangladesh Technical Education Board, 119,250 candidates were registered at 653 centres for the Bangla-2 subject exam under SSC (Vocational) and SSC (Dakhil). A total of 116,943 students attended, while 2,307 were absent.
No students were expelled under the Technical Board. However, one invigilator was removed.
The first-day figures offer an early picture of attendance and discipline as the nationwide public examinations continue in the coming days.
