A young man has been sentenced to one year in jail for trying to sit the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination as a proxy candidate in Barishal.
The incident took place on Tuesday, 28 April, at Dhamura Secondary School examination centre in Sholak Union under Wazirpur Upazila, according to local officials.
The convicted man was identified as Md. Tafsir Islam, 19. He is the son of Liaquat Sikdar from the Hastishund area under Bamrail Union of the upazila.
Officials said Tafsir Islam entered the examination centre during the ongoing SSC exam and attempted to take the test on behalf of another candidate. Invigilators and centre authorities detected the fraud and detained him at the venue.
After being informed, the local administration sent a mobile court to the centre. The court was led by Wazirpur Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Maheshwar Mondal.
The mobile court later sentenced Tafsir Islam to one year of simple imprisonment under the Public Examinations (Offences) Act. He was also fined Tk 100.
Maheshwar Mondal said public examinations are an important matter and fraud would not be tolerated. He added that regular drives would continue to ensure a fair examination environment.
Proxy test-taking is treated as a serious offence in Bangladesh because it can damage trust in the education system and deny fair chances to genuine students. Authorities often increase monitoring during major public exams such as the SSC.
The SSC examination is one of the largest public tests in Bangladesh and is taken by students across the country each year.
Local officials said monitoring at examination centres in Wazirpur will continue during the remaining exam period.
