A 56-day basic training programme for newly appointed secondary teachers will begin after Eid-ul-Fitr, officials said. The initiative will cover more than 25,000 teachers across Bangladesh. The programme is being implemented by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).
The training is part of the Learning Acceleration in Secondary Education (LASE) project. The project is funded by a loan from the World Bank. It is running from October 2023 to September 2028.
According to a recent DSHE order, the training is mandatory for newly appointed secondary teachers under 40 years of age. These teachers were recruited through the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA). The aim is to help them manage modern classroom challenges and deliver effective lessons.
Project officials said 25,240 teachers will join the next phase of training from the last week of this month. So far, 3,640 teachers have completed the course. In total, 28,800 new teachers have been included in the programme nationwide.
The training will take place in 14 government Teachers’ Training Colleges. Teachers will attend classes in 39 batches of 40 participants each. Among the colleges, 11 will conduct three batches each. Sylhet will host one batch, while Pabna and Chattogram will host two batches each.

Teachers will receive accommodation and meals during the 56-day course. They will also get a daily allowance of Tk 600. Training sessions will run from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm each day.
Professor Md. Asaduzzaman, Director (Routine Charge) of the LASE project, confirmed the matter to the media on Tuesday. He said discussions were held with the ministry and other authorities to improve the quality of new teachers.
“Secondary teachers will be trained through 39 batches in each phase,” he said.
He also noted several challenges. During the long training period, many schools face teacher shortages. Some institutions do not allow teachers to attend for this reason. A ministry circular has been issued to address the issue.
He added that some teachers are reluctant to join due to private tutoring or personal commitments. “Overall, we are working to bring teachers under the training programme,” he said.
The DSHE expects the programme to continue in phases until 2028, covering all selected teachers under the project.
