The Eid al-Adha Holiday 2026 in Bangladesh for all government primary schools began on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The decision was confirmed yesterday after confusion over whether schools would remain open on the day. According to the official announcement, the holiday will continue until Saturday, 6 June.
Md. Tanvir Mia, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, confirmed the matter to the media on Friday night.
As Friday and Saturday were weekly holidays, the last regular classes before the break were held on Thursday, 21 May. Educational institutions across the country effectively entered the vacation period from Friday.
Confusion had developed because primary schools remained closed during Ramadan earlier this year. To recover lost class time, authorities had cancelled 10 Saturday weekly holidays. Under that plan, schools were expected to remain open on Saturday, 23 May.
However, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Directorate of Primary Education did not give a clear decision earlier on whether schools would stay open on the day. Due to the delay, district and upazila primary education officials also could not provide clear instructions to teachers.
According to the official academic calendar, Eid-ul-Adha and summer vacation in government primary schools were originally scheduled from 24 May to 4 June. Since 10 Saturdays were supposed to remain working days, many expected schools to operate on 23 May.
The ministry later removed the uncertainty and confirmed that the holidays would begin on Saturday instead.
