Primary Schools Get 15-Day Eid Break

The Eid-ul-Adha and summer vacation holidays will begin in all government primary schools across Bangladesh from Saturday, May 23. The holidays will continue until Saturday, June 6.

Md. Tanvir Mia, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, confirmed the information to The Daily Campus on Friday night.

Although the official vacation starts on Saturday, students effectively began their holidays on Friday. Schools usually remain closed on Fridays and Saturdays due to the weekly holiday schedule. As a result, the last classes before the break were held on Thursday, May 21.

Confusion had developed over whether primary schools would remain open on Saturday. Earlier, 10 Saturday holidays were cancelled to recover class losses during Ramadan. Based on that decision, many teachers and officials expected schools to stay open on May 23.

However, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Directorate of Primary Education did not initially give a clear instruction on the matter. District and upazila primary education officers also could not provide final guidance to schools.

According to the annual academic calendar, Eid-ul-Adha and summer holidays in government primary schools were originally scheduled from May 24 to June 4. Since schools were supposed to remain open on some Saturdays to make up missed classes, uncertainty continued until Friday night.

At the same time, instructions under the primary school mid-day meal programme had already ordered schools to stop serving meals from May 22. That decision indicated schools would likely remain closed during the period.

The ministry later resolved the issue and confirmed that holidays would begin from Saturday across the country.

After the 15-day break, classes in primary schools are scheduled to resume on Sunday, June 7.
