Heavy Rain in Dhaka: Several Top Schools Declare Holiday, Exams Postponed

Last Updated: July 12, 2026 10:02 AM

The relentless monsoon rains have reached the classrooms of the capital. Several prestigious educational institutions in Dhaka declared a holiday today, Sunday, July 12, 2026, suspending semester exams and all classes due to the inclement weather.

Among the institutions announcing the closure are South Point School and College, Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, and St. Gregory High School and College, three of the most prominent schools in the capital.

What Each School Announced

South Point School announced in a statement from its Baridhara campus that, to ensure student safety in light of the inclement weather and continuous torrential rain, all exams scheduled for today and classes at all grade levels have been suspended. The new exam schedule and corresponding instructions will be communicated in due course.

Viqarunnisa Noon School announced that the 9th grade semester exam, the 10th grade preliminary exam, and the 11th grade practical exam, all scheduled for today, have been postponed. The new schedule for the suspended exams will be published later.

St. Gregory School also announced that all classes and exams, for both the elementary and high school sections, are suspended due to the heavy rains, and that new dates will be announced later.

According to school officials, other schools and high schools in the capital are also assessing the situation and may announce closures soon.

Why the Schools Had to Close

Dhaka has been under almost continuous rain for days. According to the Meteorological Service, intermittent showers began after midnight on Sunday and turned into heavy, steady downpours from dawn. Within hours, flooding occurred in many areas of the capital, inundating streets and alleyways.

The figures confirm it: around 97 millimeters of rain fell in Dhaka in just 24 hours. With streets underwater and the rain showing no signs of letting up, parents were very worried about sending their children to school, especially since younger students had to wade through flooded streets to reach their exam rooms. Given this situation, school authorities prioritized safety.

Rain Disrupting Education Across the Country

The closure of schools in Dhaka is the latest in a week of nationwide disruptions to education due to severe weather. The Chattogram Education Council’s HSC and equivalent exams have already been postponed several times due to flooding in the region and are now suspended until July 16. Previously, exams were also halted at institutions in Mymensingh and Rangamati as school grounds were flooded and mountainous areas faced the risk of landslides.

What Should Students and Parents Do?

If your child attends one of the schools listed, there are no exams or classes today; you do not need to go. Please check your school’s official notice board, website, or parent groups for updated exam schedules, which each institution has promised to post soon.

For students at other schools in Dhaka: please check with your school before heading out this morning, as further closures may be announced. And if you must travel in the rain, be extremely careful of open manholes and submerged manhole covers; flooded streets in Dhaka can be very dangerous.

We will update this report if more schools announce closures or new exam dates are posted. Stay tuned for the latest education updates.
