Primary schools across Bangladesh will remain open on Saturday, despite confusion over the start of Eid al-Adha and summer vacation.
The vacation in all educational institutions is set to begin from Sunday, 24 May. Since Friday and Saturday are weekly holidays in most institutions, the last regular classes before the break were held on Thursday, 21 May.
However, the situation was different for primary schools. During Ramadan, 10 weekly Saturday holidays were canceled to recover class losses. Under that arrangement, primary schools were scheduled to stay open on Saturday, 23 May.
Confusion grew after instructions were issued to stop mid-day meals in primary schools from 22 May. Many teachers and guardians were uncertain whether schools would remain open on Saturday.
Officials at the Directorate of Primary Education discussed the matter throughout the day but could not reach a final decision. The issue was later sent to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
Later in the day, the Directorate issued an official order confirming that schools would remain open on Saturday.
The order was signed by Sajjad Hossain, Assistant Director of the General Administration Division of the Directorate of Primary Education.
According to the order, the decision followed a 14 May notification from the Ministry of Public Administration and a 21 May memorandum from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
The notification stated that all government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, and private offices across the country will remain closed from 25 to 31 May for Eid-ul-Azha. Offices will stay open on 23 and 24 May.
The Directorate asked officials to take necessary measures in line with the government instructions.
After the order was issued, an official from the Directorate’s General Administration Division, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the instruction clearly indicated that primary schools would remain open on Saturday.
The official said classes and other school activities would continue as usual on that day.
