The wait for students who took the SSC exam now has a clearer deadline. Professor Syed Aktaruzzaman, chairman of the Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee, stated that the boards aim to finalize the results of this year’s SSC and equivalent exams by July 28 or 29, after which the Ministry of Education will set the final publication date.
Speaking to The Daily Star on Saturday, July 18, Professor Aktaruzzaman confirmed what students had feared since the weekend: the results will not be published on July 20, as initially announced. Once the boards finalize the publication around July 28 or 29, the ministry will set the exact publication date, meaning the release itself will occur sometime later.
Why the Delay: “Unstable Situation” on the Record
For the first time, an official from the examination board has revealed the true reason for the delay. According to Professor Aktaruzzaman, the boards had been instructed to publish the results by July 20, but the recent instability, among other factors, prevented the work from being completed on time.
Those who follow our education coverage will readily understand the implications of this statement: during those two weeks, the baccalaureate exams were disrupted by catastrophic flooding, the Chattogram Board exams were suspended indefinitely, nationwide student protests demanding the resignation of the Minister of Education took place, along with a march on the ministry and emergency meetings that reached the Prime Minister’s Office. This year’s SSC and equivalent exams began on April 21. The written portion of the nine General Education Boards’ exams concluded on May 20, while the Dakhil and Technical Board exams ran a few days longer, ending on May 24. A total of 1,857,344 students registered for this year’s exams across all boards.
Based on the usual 60-day publication period, results would normally have been expected by mid- to late July, regardless of any disruptions. Therefore, the delay, while real, is measured at approximately one to two weeks from that timeframe, not months.
What Examinees Should Do With This Information
- Recalibrate your expectations to late July — not the 20th, and not necessarily the 28th either; treat that date as when the number is decided, not when you’ll see it
