A long-held dream of Naogaon residents has come true. Naogaon University officially began its academic activities on Saturday, July 18, marking the start of higher education in the city for the first time.
The opening ceremony took place around 11:30 a.m. at the university’s temporary campus, located in the Barunkandi Mor area of Naogaon City. The Minister of Education and Primary and Mass Education, Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, attended as the guest of honor and unveiled the commemorative plaque to formally launch the university’s academic journey. Following the unveiling, the minister toured the university’s classrooms, modern library, and computer lab.
Who Attended the Launch
The ceremony, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Hasanat Ali, drew a notable gathering of officials:
- Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives — special guest
- Md. Abdul Khalek, Secretary of the Ministry of Education
- Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC)
- Professor Dr. Abdullah-Al-Mamun, Member of the UGC
- Professor Dr. Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education
Also present were the local Member of Parliament, the Deputy Commissioner as administrator of the district council, university teachers, staff and members of the newly inducted first batch of students.
“The Heartfelt Demand of Naogaon’s People”
In remarks prior to the launch, Vice-Chancellor Professor Hasanat Ali described the formal opening of academic activities as a deeply felt and long-awaited demand of the residents of Naogaon District. This sentiment was reflected in Saturday’s ceremony: it was not merely an administrative launch, but the culmination of years of waiting for a region that had long yearned for its own public university.
University officials expressed their hope that this formal start of academic activities will open a new horizon of higher education for students in Naogaon and the wider northern region—students who, until now, often had to travel far from home to pursue university studies.
What This Launch Means
Saturday’s event marked the welcoming of the first class of students for the 2025-26 academic year, along with their orientation to university life. For a region long characterized by a lack of access to local higher education, a fully operational campus, complete with classrooms, a library, and computer facilities, demonstrates that this is a fully functioning university from day one, and not just a symbolic announcement.
For prospective students and their families in Naogaon and the surrounding districts, this launch opens up a new, more accessible option for higher education, one that allows students to remain close to home during their formative academic years.
What Comes Next
As is typical for newly established public universities, Naogaon University is expected to expand progressively: more departments, permanent campus infrastructure, and increased admission capacity in the coming years. We will keep you updated on admissions announcements, academic offerings, and campus development as they become available.
Congratulations to the first graduating class of Naogaon University and to the entire region that has eagerly awaited this day! Stay tuned for more news about Bangladesh’s newest public university.
